Looking for a nutritious treat that provides lots of healthy nutrients but doesn’t taste like it’s good for you? This traditional Mexican salsa recipe is a fat-burning powerhouse. The capsaicin in the jalapenos and cayenne pepper heats up your metabolism and triggers the fat-burning mechanism that helps you shed weight faster. Peppers aren’t the only healthy ingredients in this recipe, though.

The red onions provide fiber and a handful of important vitamins, and the tomatoes are packed with vitamin C, which helps your body process fats more readily. Cilantro, which gives salsa its characteristic piquant green flavor, has 1 calorie in ¼ cup, but that one calorie is packed with fiber, Thiamin and Zinc, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol), Vitamin K, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Pantothenic Acid, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Copper and Manganese. It’s also anti-inflammatory and very filling, making it a great ingredient for weight loss meals.

  • 4 cups diced tomatoes
  • ¾ cup diced red onion
  • ¼ cup red wine vinegar
  • 1 ½ jalapeno peppers, seeded and chopped
  • ½ cup chopped cilantro
  • Cayenne pepper to taste

Directions

Combine all ingredients in a medium size, non-reactive bowl – glass is ideal. Refrigerate for at least two hours, or as long as overnight.

Instead of corn chips or tortilla, serve salsa with thinly sliced cucumbers for dipping.
